Part 2 Chapter 38 - Residue (1)* Summary
As Young Gon proceeds to pay for his things, he looks around. Sul is hiding behind the shelf, and as soon as he leaves, she panics, wondering why Young Gon is here. She wonders if he's attending a tutoring center in the area, and worries what she'll do if she encounters him. She tries to go through the back alleyway, in fear of meeting him, but from behind, he greets her.
He greets her politely, asking if she attends a tutoring center in the area. He's overall very polite, but Sul can't help backing away. He asks: "Why are you like this? This is making me embarassed. Maybe it's awkward for you since we haven't met in a while? No pressure, let's talk comfortably." But Sul replies that she has nothing to talk about. Young Gon replies: "Ah, you're still has touchy as always. Don't be like that~ I'm kind of hurt." Just then, In Ho and a group of foreign language teachers pass by. One of them tells "Thomas" that his friend is over there. As he looks at Sul and Young Gon, some of the teachers joke about how "she dumped him." In Ho notices that Sul looks worried, but he walks off.
Young Gon proceeds to ask Sul about how he heard that Jung and Sul are friends now. He asks if they are going out. When Sul flinches, Young Gon continues: "Hey, I'm saying this for your sake. Get your mind straight. You really shouldn't be like this, falling for him just because of his pretty face. You and I, we both were harassed by that guy. And now you're friends with him? Wow, that sunbae's a really weird person." At his words, Sul tells him that he's speaking nonsense. He continues: "I'm always your side, Sul, you know? We're on the same side. We became distant because of that perosn. So how about it? Maybe we should go to a cafe and talk a bit more - "
When Young Gon reaches out, she panics and slaps his hand. She yells: "Are you insane? After all that happened, you think you can just casually ask me to go to a cafe with you?!" Young Gon merely asks why she's so touchy. He realizes that it must be because of what happened in the past, and tells her that it was so long ago that they should forget about it. He adds on that he really doesn't like her anymore. He further adds on that he'll be attending school very soon, so they should become friends from now on.
At Sul's shock, he tells her: "I'm telling this to you, because I worry for you. I'm trying to help you. I don't know how you work like that - a violent guy like Kwon Eun Take, or a two-faced guy like Yoo Jung - You have such bad taste in choosing guys." When Sul yells at him, he continues: "Even if you're really dating Yoo Jung sunbae, there's no way he's sincere about it. He was like that to me last year. He was nice to me, then suddenly abandonded me, you know? You. That's going to happen to you as well. You fell for him because he was nice to you, huh? If I was a girl, I'd probably see him in a nice light as well. But do you really think that's the truth? What's so good about you that he'd do such a thing?" As he approaches Sul, she backs away, telling him to go away.
He tells her to stop treating him like a bug, and swears "Shit." He tells her that she should be thankful for warning her. She exclaims that she didn't want his interferment, and he shouldn't blab on like that after making the conclusions himself. She yells that she doesn't want to hear his opinions, nor does she want to even speak with him.
When she raises her voice, he replies: "God. Stop screaming like a mad woman. Huh? What if someone sees? Calm down. And take a breath." Sul realizes that he won't listen to a word she says. She wonders if she should run off, but realizes that if he attends a tutoring place near by, she'll encounter him somehow once again. She decides to finish it off now.
As he offers to buy a drink or something, she threatens him: "Stop it! If you ignore what I say and keep on spreading such nonsense even after school starts, I'll reveal everything that I recorded -!"
Young Gon replies: "What?" He laughs, and says that when he tried to record something on an mp3 as old as Sul's, he couldn't hear a thing properly. Sul realizes that she hasn't checked the recording herself.
Then, Young Gon tells her: "Anyway... You really make people feel bad. Who are you threatening right now? Or are you gonna call that Kwon Eun Taek bastard and make him hit me again? Just try. This time, I won't just stand around. How silly of me. I was screwed over because of you. My entire college life was ruined! How lucky you are. How'd you charm him? You couldn't even hang out with guys at school, like a loser...!"
At that moment, In Ho appears and kicks Young Gon. He tells Young Gon: "Ah~ I really tried to stay quiet and listen, but... My ears are gonna rot. Dog fur, you really... Your boyfriend... and this guy. You only attract the weird ones." When Young Gon swears at him, he gives Young Gon a "look." Young Gon asks who he is to kick somebody in the back like that, and In ho replies: "Then who are you to grab onto a girl in the middle of the street and whine like a child...? It was just rea~lly disturbing for me to watch. What should I do with this loser~"
As Young Gon yells at him, In Ho realizes that Young Gon might be planning to hit him. He wonders if he should just let Young Gon hit him, and then pay him back much more - but then he realizes that Sul, a girl, is watching, and decides not to anything too violent. In Ho reflects Young Gon's punch easily and taunts him.
Young Gon then mutters: "Hong Sul, you are amazing. Kwong Eun Taek, Yoo Jung - and now you've charmed a foreigner as well? The more I get to know you, the dirtier you get. And you lectured me about how I hit on all the girls - (at this statment, Sul is angered)... Really, trash like you that flirts with all these men - "
At this statement, In Ho punches Young Gon in the face.

* cimmanon suggested 'Residue' for this chapter's title. Originally, I translated it more literally as "sediment," but in context, it could also mean "unresolved tension."
