My roommate and I are both geeks, so I was suggesting a bunch of Korean webtoons to her when she mentioned that she already read a lot of Western webcomics. So I checked some out. And some of them are pretty good. You learn something everyday, as they say...

So here is a thread where the readers of both types of webmedia can discuss their favorite non-Asian series, as well as comparing them to the well beloved stuff we find on this site. I'll start us off by listing some webcomics I'm following.

-Paranormal (on ComicFury)
-Tripping Over You (Which is a bit odd, since it's a British (?) take on gay romance.)
-xkcd (It's... weird, to say the least. May be unsuitable for children, adults, and liberal arts majors)
-Girl Genius (Steampunk. That is all)

Feel free to expand on this topic, since I'm rather new to the readership.

awesome :D

I recommend White Noise
http://white-noise.smackjeeves.com/comi ... test-page/

Gunnerkirgg Court
http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=1
this one might not be a looker at first, but the art really gets better, and the story as well.

Scrub Monkeys
http://girlamatic.com/shrubmonkeys/2006 ... monkeys-1/
it may not seem as funny the first pages, but it will make you rofl so many times later on xD

and Humon's works. She's really witty, her comics rich with humor, satire, European mythology and culture, as well as LGBT (WARNING!).
- Scandinavia and the World (satire about countries of the world) , LGBT-free
http://satwcomic.com/sweden-denmark-and-norway

- Neils and Gang
This is a story about people and their relationships, and yes, it has LGBT in them. It's as funny as hell. WARNING: it can get mildly graphic.
The official starting point: http://nielsg.com/love-me-the-scandinavian-way
but really? you can start from anywhere, just read back if you're curious enough. I just recommend the Agent 250/300 story arch.
I recommend you start here: http://250x300.deviantart.com/gallery/? ... 8#/d3g9eut

EEEEE I don't think you guys even know about me and Western Webcomics.

Also, Shrub Monkies ♥

I read a lot of video game based webcomics as well as some 'blog' type webcomics. Here's the ones I've read/reading:

Cucumber Quest- An adventure made by Gigi Digi formerly known as Peachi. It's super cute! You should also check out some of her older works.

Nedroid- Kind of random but cute and funny at the same time usually.

Awkward Zombie- Mostly about video games.

Phuzzy Comics- A funny blog comic about a girl name Monica. I just recently found one, and it was pretty entertaining.

Hejibits- Mostly about video games. Be careful, there tends to be language.

Hark! A Vagrant!- a webcomic about history. It pokes at fun at various well-known times and characters from history and books. Every now and then there'll be language, so be careful.

Boxer Hockey- a webcomic about a team who plays the imaginary game boxer hockey. BE REALLY CAREFUL. Lots of language and some crude jokes that borderline. The story is interesting.

I read a ton more, so if anyone is interested, just ask c:

Wow, thanks guys. I'll definitely be checking those out. Recs are such sweet gifts to the fledgling fan of any field~ <--lol, alliteration alert
Starting a webcomic is really easy, I realized -- I think I might start one myself in the near future. Does anyone out there write their own comics?

No, I don't write comics, but I am a writer and an editor. Nychii and I said we'd throw around some ideas and start our own Webcomic for Webtoons Live one day....the clue word being "one day." Although, I have a ton of ideas floating around in my head, I don't have a lot of time to actually conceptualize it :(

If you did decide to write a Webcomic, what would it be about or what genre?

I guess when I first thought of Western Webcomics, I always visualized villans versus superheroes, and they usually have capes. Ugh. But the one good, no, probably great thing about Western comics is their diversity. No offense to Korean toons/comics. What I mean by that is, Western comics are able to more easily target a specific audience by labeling and narrowing the genres of their comic (i.e., LGBT, gay comics, bisexual, etc.).
I found some great gay Webcomics *blushes* WARNING!!! It is for ADULTS only! As such, I won't post the links, and I'll only tell you the names of them. If you want the links, PM me.
The first one is called Starfighter. It is sci-fi, and about a flight navigator named Abel who gets assigned a new fighter pilot to his ship named...you guessed it, Cain. Can you see where I'm going with this? There are only two chapters so far, but *fansface* well, you get it.
The second one is called Teahouse. It's about a brothel where you can buy men or women. Basically, it is a lot of bishies who like to have sex. But it has its cute and romantic moments as well. There are three chapters so far.
The third one that I liked is called Artifice. It is also sci-fi, and it is about a robot, or A.I., and a human guy. Kinda reminds me of Three Level Combo, but gay, lol. This one is updated on a page by page basis, no chapters. This author is much, much more soft core than the above mentioned, and it seems to me the story will be more of a love story, but I could be wrong. But so far, not much has happened. If it turns into something mature, I'll take down this link. So, here is that link: http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/

Um, and I know we are talking about comics here, but I have to mention a gay/yaoi novel I stumbled across. I can't even remember how I found it now. Oh, right through Facebook. Gotta love social networks! Here's the link: http://raythereign.com/
She writes mostly m/m stories, but she does have stories with m/f relationships. However, the story that got me hooked is called The Abyss. Freakin' amazing. Basically, it's about a young boy named Anarion whose father is leading a rebellion against an alien race called The Kin. His father tells Anarion that Abbandon, The Kin's leader, is not to be trusted, and if the humans make peace with The Kin, all hope would be lost. Eventually, Anarion's father is caught and brought to trial...where he sees The Kin leader for the first time.
Maybe she could use a little editing, but the storyline is wonderful. I have no idea how she thought up of something so elaborate. I think the first four chapters can be sent to you for free, but be careful cuz you will be addicted!
Hope no one was offended by my choices ;)

@mearles
Thanks for the suggestions :) I don't mind stories with same sex relationships -- I'm currently following Tripping Over You, a coming out story about two guys at a boarding school. I really don't want to look into anything that gets too... er, explicit, though, so I might pass on some of your suggestions. I'm sure others viewers are really grateful for the suggestions though ;)

If I were to start a webcomic... er, actually, I've already started drafting the first chapter or so of mine. It's a dystopian cyberpunk narrative, so lots of street fighting, mind hacking, secretive government organizations... yeah, I'm a bit of a sci fi fan. Stories like Ghost in the Shell, Darker Than Black, the Matrix, etc, are what I adore. I'm using ComicFury as my hosting site, although I've heard SmackJeeves is good for hosting too. Tell me if you actually ever finish your webcomic -- I'd love to read it :D

From what I've seen, it looks to me that Korean webtoons tend to have better artwork... although that might just be me not being exposed to enough webcomics. Anyone know any western webcomics with artwork that competes with the stuff on this site?

Location: Mars. Its nice here.
Im not much into yaoi either but i started reading that robot one (which isnt bad ;o) and nearly spewed soda everywhere when the colonist mentioned he was homosexual. I dunno why, but it was pretty hilarious that in the future, the author thinks it will be a big deal XD I just, didnt see that one coming.
I just wish it was more sci fi (the robot idea is awesome) less homosexual stuff. (no offense)
Anyone know any good sci fi's without romance?

Like I said, I think if you don't mind same-sex relationships, you'd enjoy Artifice. The drawings in that are amazing. It is waaay above some of the Korean Webcomics, in my opinion. And like I've said, nothing has happened between the characters....yet, but even if it does, it would be mild.
The author, Alex Woolfson, and the artist, Winona Nelson, run a site together called yaoi911.com. It's got lots of info on it, and also, you can receive the first two chapters of his other Webcomic called, Tough, for free. I'd also recommended this one since it is tame and because the drawings were amazing. Although, this one is not sci-fi. It is about serious subject matter (i.e., facing diversity, facing your own sexuality, internal conflicts, etc.) and ultimately, a romance story.

Fyi: I <3 Darker than Black!!! Just had to throw that out there. I <3 Hei! He's soooo smexy!

Hmm..? Good question. I could probably find some in novels or in Japanese manga better than I could in Webcomics. I couldn't find any western sci-fi, non-romance comics. I only found a few Korean Webcomics in this category. The one I found (but I haven't read so don't take my word on it, lol) was Knight Run. It's sci-fi, but according to mangaupdates, it doesn't have romance, supposedly.

Here is the link for Knight Run and some others with just Sci-fi that I found via mangaupdates, but I don't know how good these are:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=57650
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=66274
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=48213
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=48209
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=59268

Also, here are the mangaupdate links for Starfighter and Teahouse that I mentioned earlier if you want to look at what they are about and reviews:

Wow, I checked out Hark! A Vagrant! and nearly busted my sides laughing. Who knew bashing on prim and proper historical figures could be so much fun? Although is it a bad thing that I don't always get the jokes? *feels slightly stupid*

Also, I now know where that "Ooh, Mr. ___" meme comic came from. Of course it would be Mr. Darcy who started the whole thing.

Manga magazine has some interesting OELs as well. All the ones I've read on there aren't episodic...
