Do you have any hint whether the spammers were bots (try customizing captcha), or if you could apply some anti-spam rules to the phpbb forum (up-to-date?) (not allowed to post URLs nor allowed to post more than one post until the first-post is flagged "okay" by anyone already flagged "okay" or admin) ?
